So, You Want To Start a Web Hosting Business?

Starting a web hosting company can be a fun, challenging and rewarding business to get into. Often, though, people find themselves at the bottom of a mountain lacking the technical skills and/or money to build up a web hosting company. Before doing anything, you’ll want to examine the market very carefully. Are you really ready for what I am about to tell you?

While the road to making money from web hosting may look like a walk in the park, it really isn’t. Many times you’ll find that no matter what you do there is always some problem that needs fixing. Personally, I recommend starting off small by purchasing a reseller or master reseller from anyone of a number of popular hosts. I prefer SitePenguin, HostGator or GoDaddy. These offer affordable reseller plans and have easy steps to help you get started. In addition, depending on what you pick, you’ll probably want to purchase a design of some from and WHMCS. Hopefully you understand how to edit HTML so that you can begin work at a much lower cost and have some foreground before you begin in the business. The great news is if you don’t understand anything about HTML you can hire someone to help and a lot of people will work at reasonable prices.

Having a reseller account enables you not only to sell hosting, but to leave the technical problems in the hands of those who have years more experience than you do. This will not only make getting the company off the ground easier and more affordable but will also prove to save you a large amount of hassle down the road. The best piece of advice I can give anyone starting a hosting company this way is to never tell your clients you are a reseller. It may put fear in their heads that you can’t offer the support they need should something go wrong.

As your company grows you’ll eventually need to expand to either a VPS or Dedicated Server. When this happens make sure you have the funds to hire a decent Linux technician so that should a problem arise you have the personnel on hand to ensure there isn’t a problem you can’t handle. As you grow larger, offering VPS or even multiple locations for your clients to choose from may help to strengthen your business and make your company more profitable. Be aware, the more features you offer the harder it is to maintain them all and the harder it is to keep everyone happy.
